The House I Remember from my Childhood in Baltimore

We had been sharing a three story house with our grandparents, cousin Lizzie, uncle Norman, his three children, aunt Violet and her husband. Finding this apartment was very exciting, it had five rooms, full bath and a storage room. The rent was low because the apartment had a commitment. Whoever lived there had to keep the furnace running to supply heat for this large apartment building. This meant Mom was going to be doing some coal shoveling. The building had several one floor apartments. Our apartment was in the back of the building with two stories. The first floor had a living room and a large kitchen. The second floor had three bedrooms, full bath, and a storage room. It was larger upstairs because part of it was over a garage. That garage was rented by a painter and he stored his paint supplies there. In the kitchen was a trap door that led to the basement and that was where the large furnace was located. I can remember Mom being tied with the responsibility of that furnace. She was always afraid the fire would go out. There were some small children living in the building and Mom didn’t want the tenants to get cold. The furnace was fired up so high at times that some of the tenants had their windows open
